First up, we have the fantastic Joe Solo. Joe has just released a new album – Sledgehammer Songs.

On top of releasing twenty one albums since 2004, he has written a series of children’s books for Unison on social justice and equality; and co-runs ‘May Day Festival of Solidarity‘ – an annual event bringing together voices from music, poetry and politics to celebrate International Worker’s Day.

Joe also helped create WE SHALL OVERCOME – a campaign pushing for a positive response from the music community to the poverty and hardship inflicted on ordinary people as a result of the austerity agenda. Since October 2015 it has organised more than 1100 gigs up and down the UK and beyond – raising an estimated £750,000 in cash, food, clothing and bedding for those hardest hit.

You can find out more about Joe and his music – either via his website or his Facebook.
The wonderful Maddy Carty Music is the second of our confirmed performers for our Community Festival.

She has just released a new EP – Hell of a Year. It follows on from a number of earlier releases – which include some biting commentary on the state of the nation from the years of the “Condemn” government onwards.

More information about Maddy and her music can be found on her website or via her Facebook

We’re pleased to confirm that a squad from Poetry on the Picket Line will be reading their work at our Festival. Normally found on picket lines espousing the spirit of solidarity!

We can now confirm that ZELT will be joining Joe Solo, Maddy Carty and Poetry on the Picket Line in performing at our Festival.

ZELT is an East London-based, Anglo-Turkish three-piece. As an internationalist socialist band, they play a SWANA region-inspired mix of Turkish/Middle Eastern folk combined with strong post-punk and electronic musical influences. The current set features their take on Palestinian, Georgian and Turkish songs alongside their own compositions. Their music has recently featured on the ‘Barbican Recommends’ playlist.

Singer and darbuka player, Semra Bulut, is a regular on the London ex-pat music scene playing percussion with Bulkan folk act Balamuc (a session of whose was recently broadcast on BBC Radio 3), alongside vocal duties with the London Bulgarian Choir. Semra is joined on drums/electronics by Phil Seddon, a recent trustee of Waltham Forest Migrant Action (who they often raise money for) and guitarist Dave Adams, an active member of Newham NEU.

The trio are set to release ‘Istanbul’u Dinliyorum’ – their debut album as a trio – this October and will be playing songs from that release at the festival.
